Senior RF & Microwave Infrastructure Technician

The Telecommunications and Data Centre Support Section within the Infrastructure and Operational Support Branch of DFAT's Information Management and Technology Division has a requirement for an ICT labour hire resource to fill the role of Radio Frequency (RF) Field Technician to support the Emergency Communications Network project (ECN) which involves the upgrade of legacy radio networks at Posts to ensure emergency communications are reliable and fit for purpose.  Key duties and responsibilities Job specific role description: The role is responsible for: providing input and assisting with the identification, development, installation and modification of radio frequency (RF) and satellite solutions for DFAT global capability;  assisting with fault resolution, requirement gathering, capability and solution design, installation and integration of RF solutions; scoping, design, set up, tuning/ calibration and functional checks of RF devices and software, following maintenance schedules and using appropriate tools and test equipment;  integrating hardware/ firmware modifications, implement communication systems and elements in accordance with standards; support of fault/ performance indications and fault resolution and/or escalates according to given procedures; investigating and resolving system-wide fault conditions using a wide range of diagnostic tools and techniques;  reconfiguring equipment to circumvent temporary outages; specifying and supporting the selection and integration of RF devices in systems; providing support in internal communication and assisting with the reconfiguration of devices and software to optimise performance; monitoring system performance, recommend equipment modifications, upgrades and changes to operating procedures, service maintenance methods and schedules;  assisting with equipment upgrades and modifications and approvals;  reviewing industry and technology advancements, national standards, relevant RF protocols and regulations; and measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of operational solutions, devices and software. Other activities may include, but not limited to: Evaluating and selecting devices and software. Integrating radio frequency (RF) sub-systems into larger systems. Calibrating, tuning and maintaining devices and software. Deployment and installation of systems globally. Developing, integrating and configuring antennas, readers and transmitters. Adhering to established safety, security and quality standards. The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) has been used to inform the requirements. In summary, DFAT seeks suitable candidates with the following relevant skillsets: Skills/Levels: Development and Implementation – Systems Development - Radio Frequency Engineering (RFEN) – Level 6 Criteria The buyer has specified that each candidate must provide a one page pitch to address all criteria specified. This is equal to 5000 characters. Essential criteria 1. • Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in radio communication engineering. 2. • Strong understanding of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing an optimisation. 3. • Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation, including high-level designs and maintenance plans. 4. • Willingness to travel regularly to geographically dispersed DFAT Posts and remote locations as required for system deployments, maintenance and support. 5. • Minimum active NV2 security clearance with PV preferred. Desirable criteria 1. • Experience supporting government satellite communication projects and Australian Embassies or other Australian sites overseas. 2. • Ability to mentor or provide technical guidance to junior engineers or field technicians.
