Job description
The Test and Quality Assurance (TQA) team provide enterprise testing guidance, governance and specialist capability. The TQA team require an Automation Tester to provide specialist engineering capability. The role will design, develop and maintain complex Playwright automated tests, framework patterns, utilities and integration components, and will support automated test execution across build, test and deployment pipelines. The role will provide authoritative testing advice, apply and improve agreed methods and tools, and work with the TQA team and participating application teams to establish consistent automation governance, traceability and reporting. This includes integration of test results with Azure DevOps Test Plans and consolidated reporting to improve release assurance and confidence in production deployment readiness. The successful candidate will work closely with the Automation Lead, Test Manager and application test teams, focusing on collaboration, the development of reusable assets, documentation, knowledge transfer, peer review, and the adoption of sustainable, reusable automation practices across delivery teams. Key duties and responsibilities Design, develop, verify, document, maintain and refactor reliable and reusable Playwright automated tests, framework components, patterns and utilities using TypeScript or JavaScript. Assess existing automated tests, prioritise suitable migration candidates and convert agreed tests into maintainable Playwright tests that preserve required functional outcomes. Support the controlled migration from the current automation capability to the target Playwright framework, documenting migration patterns, dependencies, constraints, risks and lessons learned. Work with TQA and participating application teams to improve automated test coverage and embed consistent, sustainable testing practices across development, test and deployment stages. Integrate and orchestrate automated tests through Azure DevOps build, test and deployment pipelines, including test execution, result publication, failure evidence and reporting. Improve pipeline hygiene by reviewing and rationalising existing pipeline configurations, reducing duplication and obsolete components, and improving reusable YAML templates, triggers, variables, artifact handling, reliability and maintainability. Implement consistent test-tagging conventions, test coverage reporting and traceability between automated tests, Azure DevOps Test Plans, pipeline executions and deployment outcomes. Enable consolidated reporting across pipelines, Test Plans and deployments to support release assurance, production-readiness assessments and change-management decisions. Assess automation and pipeline risks, monitor adherence to agreed engineering and governance standards, and recommend preventative actions and improvements to methods, tools and processes. Contribute improvements to the Playwright framework, including reusable fixtures, utilities, configuration, test-data, authentication, reporting and diagnostic patterns where required. Provide specialist technical advice and leadership within the assigned workstream, including peer reviews, troubleshooting, documentation and collaboration with multidisciplinary delivery teams. Deliver knowledge-transfer sessions, technical documentation and handover materials to enable APS staff and application teams to maintain and extend the capability. Maintain a prioritised migration backlog and provide recommendations and an implementation roadmap for remaining automation migration and pipeline improvement work.
