Job description

AI Engineers are primarily responsible for the implementation of AI models and algorithms. Working under the guidance of more experienced professionals they contribute to the design, testing, and deployment of AI solutions.  The AI Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, integrating, deploying and maintaining artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes. The role works across the AI lifecycle, from experimentation and prototyping through to production implementation, monitoring, optimisation and retirement. The AI Engineer applies contemporary AI engineering practices to develop secure, scalable, reliable and responsible AI solutions, including machine learning, generative AI, large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), intelligent automation and AI-enabled decision support. Desirable qualifications/knowledge: • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical modelling and analytical techniques, and their application to complex business problems and datasets. • Best-practice data cleansing, validation, quality assurance and feature preparation techniques for complex datasets. • Data science platforms, analytical environments and integration approaches that support scalable, reproducible and reliable delivery. • AI engineering and software development skills and experience developing scalable, production ready AI applications. • Practical knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, agents and generative AI application patterns. • Ability to design AI solution architectures and integrate AI capabilities with enterprise systems, data platforms and applications. • MLOps and LLMOps understanding of AI lifecycle management, CI/CD, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement. • Ability to design and implement testing and evaluation approaches. • Advanced degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on data science, machine learning, or artificial intelligence. • Experience (typically 3+ years) in AI/ML engineering with a proven track record. Key duties and responsibilities Key duties may include all or some of the following: • Design, develop and implement AI and machine learning solutions aligned to business needs and strategic objectives. • Develop and integrate generative AI and LLM-based solutions, including prompt engineering, RAG, agents and AI-enabled applications. • Design, build and maintain custom AI agents, including tool definitions, control flow, state and memory, retries, escalation paths and stopping conditions. • Translate business problems into appropriate AI/ML solution architectures, technical designs and implementation approaches. • Develop prototypes and proofs of concept to assess the feasibility, value and technical viability of emerging AI technologies. • Prepare, transform and engineer data required for AI/ML model development and deployment. • Develop model inference, orchestration and application integration components using appropriate APIs, frameworks and cloud services. • Implement production-grade AI solutions using software engineering principles including version control, testing, CI/CD, automated deployment and documentation. • Implement appropriate model evaluation, validation and testing approaches, including accuracy, robustness, reliability, bias/fairness, hallucination and safety testing where applicable. • Develop and implement monitoring for AI solutions, including model performance, data quality, drift, latency, availability, cost, usage and business outcomes. • Diagnose and resolve issues affecting AI solution performance, reliability, security and user experience. • Optimise models and AI applications for performance, scalability, cost and operational efficiency. • Implement appropriate controls for AI security, privacy, data protection, access management and responsible AI. • Contribute to AI assurance, risk assessment and governance activities, providing technical evidence and advice • Ensure AI solutions are appropriately documented, including architecture, models, datasets, prompts, dependencies, limitations, risks, controls and operational requirements. Criteria The buyer has specified that each candidate must provide a one page pitch to address all criteria specified. This is equal to 5000 characters. Essential criteria 1. Programming/software development: Level 3 (SFIA) Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result. Monitors and reports on progress. Identifies issues related to software development activities. Proposes practical solutions to resolve issues. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.
